Burgess Road Surgery

Burgess Road Surgery is the nearest local doctors surgery to the Wessex Lane Hall Complex. The surgery is open all day - Monday to Friday 8.30am to 6pm.

One Stop

The One Stop Convenience store on Burgess Road is one of the nearest shops to Wessex Lane for those simple items you need to purchase.

Pharmacy

The Moss Pharmacy on Burgess Road is the nearest pharmacist to Wessex Lane. You can collect your doctors prescriptions, as well as over the counter medicines, from here.

Banks & Post Office

To the north of Highfield Campus, on Burgess Road, there are a number of Banks. These include Barclays, Lloyds TSB, HSBC and Natwest. They are all very familiar with the financial needs of students.

Also here is a Post Office, Waterstones bookshop and insurance agent.

Boldrewood Campus

This is the University's Boldrewood Campus, the main location for studies relating to biological and medical subjects.

To get from Wessex Lane catch the U6H bus from outside the halls.

Southampton General Hospital

Southampton General Hospital incorporates the local Accident & Emergency unit. It is also a teaching hospital, hence student nurses and medical students will spend a lot of time here.

To get to SGH from the halls catch the U6H Uni-link bus.

University Health Service

The University Health Service is located directly on the Highfield Campus between the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the Physics building. The surgery opening hours are, Monday-Friday, 8.00am - 5.30pm.

Students' Union and Sports Centre

The Students' Union on Highfield Campus is the centre of the student social facilities. There are 4 distinct bar areas as well as the Cube nightclub. There is also a cafeteria and coffee bar. The Cube doubles up as the Union cinema and is run by the Film Society. Additional facilities include squash courts and a snooker room. Next door to the union is the new University Sport Centre, which includes a swimming pool and gym facilities. For more information go to the Sport and Recreation Department webpage from the links section.

To get here from halls catch the U1C or U6H and get off at the Highfield Interchange. The Union and Sport Centre are a short 2 minute walk away.

Student Support Centre

 

The Student Services Centre (SSC) provides centralised access to the services of the University and will help with all student enquiries relating to accommodation, student fees, student funds, admissions, ID cards, disability services, exams and graduation.

The SSC is open Monday - Friday, 9am - 5.30pm (Tuesday 10.30am - 5.30pm).

The 3rd -14th October, the Centre will stay open until 7pm.

To get here from hall catch the U1C, the bus stops directly outside of the SSC.

Highfield Health

Highfield Health Doctors Surgery is located directly on the Highfield Campus, a 3 minute walk way from the Students' Union on University Road. The surgery opening hours are, Monday-Friday, 8.40am - 5.30pm.

Avenue Campus

This is the location of the University's Avenue Campus. To get here catch the U1C from outside of the halls to the Highfield Interchange. Then either catch the U2 Uni-link bus to the Avenue campus or it is a 15 minute walk south of the Highfield Campus.

Portswood Police Station

This is the nearest Police station to Wessex Lane.

Portswood High Street

Portswood is the nearest shopping area to Wessex Lane. On the high street you will find Woolworths, Boots, October Books and other well known chains. There are also a selection of newsagents, charity shops and other stores. There are also Somerfield and Safeway supermarkets here.

Portswood High Street is also the location of a number of bars, popular with students as well as a number of restaurants and take-away venues.

To get here, catch either the U1C or U6C. Both buses drive down Portswood High Street.

Safeway

This is the nearest supermarket to Wessex Lane.

Safeway is open 8am-10pm Monday-Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

The U6 and U1 buses both stop very nearby.

Tesco Express

This is the nearest Tesco to Wessex Lane.

This is a small Tesco Express and petrol station.

London Road

London Road and Bedford Place are a popular areas for student nightlife. There are a large number of bars and clubs in this area including The Giddy Bridge, Orange Rooms, Mono, Apartment 26, Avondale House and the Lizard Lounge to name but a few. There are also a number of nightclubs including the popular student venue The Academy.

The U1 bus runs up and down London Road.

Asda

The Asda in the city centre is the largest supermarket accessible with the Uni-link bus service. The U6, U1 and U2 bus services all stop very near to Asda. For those with access to a car there is a multi-storey car park at the rear of the building.

Asda is open 8am-8pm Monday-Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.

City Centre

Southampton has an excellent shopping district in the City Centre. The West Quay Shopping Centre contains a host of well known brand stores. There are also the Marlands and Bargate Shopping Centres.

The City Centre is accessible on the U1, U6 and U2 bus services.

Southampton Central Train Station

This is the main train station for Southampton. From here you are able to catch trains to destinations all across the country.

The U1 bus service runs via Southampton Central Station.

Local Housing Estates

Please be aware that this area is somewhat 'off the beaten track' and therefore students should take care if they are walking back to the halls of residence, especially at night. If possible walk back with a group of people keeping to well-lit areas. Alternatively, make use of the University Safety Bus or the Unilink service.
